High victorian Revival

This project is located on Commerce Street in downtown Centreville, Md. The owner had inherited the house from his dad and decided to restore the house and add some 20th century amenities, like a real kitchen, master bedroom and bathroom, and a place to put some Lazy-Boy recliners. The residence is about as close to High Victorian as one can get in this area. The couple had just moved here from San Francisco, so a bit of the “painted lady architecture” maybe went a bit too far. Anyhow, the challenge was to match the existing architecture, provide the needed modern amenities, and maybe move ahead into the “shingle style” (a bit beyond Victoriana). I was pleased at the level of detail they agreed to construct. It’s so rare you find clients willing to do a job to rive the existing construction.

The Carriage House

The Carriage House was built as a companion piece for the Trippe House located in Historic Downtown Easton. The owners were seeking a multi-use space that included a work area, a one car garage, storage and an apartment. Given the location in the Historic District, the Carriage House was designed to complement the main house, but to exist individual and special in its own right.

Upon completion, comments on the street were all favorable: "I didn't know they built things like that anymore!" was one comment, and another was "It looks like its always been here". This was just the intention. The Trippe House is a true beauty, one of the better examples of Gothic Revival Cottages in a rural town, Easton, Maryland

The Glory Cottage

This project located in Oxford, a small Chesapeake community in historically charged Talbot County was inspired by the owners’ appreciation of simple, straightforward detail and a love of small cottages, particularly their neighbor’s small cottage that Jay completed many years before. The existing residence, located on a beautiful property with sweeping views of the Tred Avon, was in terrific shape and a great candidate for a second floor addition. The design was as symmetrical as possible in order to accommodate the clean and direct look the owners were going for.
